There's been a lot of buzz recently about
Hollywood films being shot with high definition video cameras.
While almost without exception the movie you see in the
theatre is projected from film, virtually all movies today
have been converted to high resolution video for editing
purposes then printed back out to conventional film stock.
Film print technology continues to advance. Film still has
superior resolution and the ability to adapt to different
levels of light in the same frame. But video has advanced to
the point where in many cases movies are shot using HD cameras
with motion picture lenses. The Red One Camera used by
"Lord of the Rings" director Peter Jackson is a good
example. It is a camera that uses no tape. The images are
captured directly to data cards for editing. The resulting
movies are breath taking and many film makers are being
won over to digital "film-making." So when we refer
to our video work as filming and the finished product as
movies, we're in good company.
